- Using Admin Renamer Extended WordPress Plugin
Simply install and activate Admin renamer extended plugin. Now go to plugins >> Admin Renamer Extended and here you can change your admin username.
- Using Username Changer WordPress Plugin
Firstly install and activate Username changer plugin. After activation, go to users >> Username Changer.
Now select the username you want to change and enter the new username is New Username field and click on save changes.
And with this, you have successfully changed your WordPress username. One more thing, if you want you can deactivate or delete this plugin after you changed your WordPress username.
Changing Your WordPress Username Using phpMyAdmin
If you like me don’t like to install a plugin for every little thing then you can use phpMyAdmin method to change your default WordPress username.
Before proceeding with this method, I want to make it very clear that this is a geeky method and can be a little bit complicated.
Personally, I do not recommend this method to anyone who is new to phpMyAdmin. But if you don’t have any other choice, then you can use this method but follow it carefully.
Before proceeding, please backup your WordPress database. You can use DB-Manager to quickly backup your WordPress database.
Firstly login to your cPanel.
In cPanel Dashboard, Scroll down to “Databases” Section and click on “phpMyAdmin”.
Now inside phpMyAdmin, locate and select your WordPress database from the list on the left. In case you are not sure about your WordPress database. Then open your wp-config.php file located in root of your WordPress installation and find the following lines:
Your database name will be in place of Your_DB in above code.
Once you have selected your WordPress database, you will see your WordPress database tables.
Now click on wp_users on the left side. It is possible that your database tables use other prefixes than wp. You will see all the registered users on your WordPress site.
Look for admin username and click on the pencil icon to edit.
Change the "user_login" value from admin to whatever username you want.
Then click on Go button and you have successfully changed your default admin username using phpMyAdmin.
Manual Method: Changing Your WordPress username By Creating A New User
This is quite an easy method but you need to use a different email address. In this method, you need to create a new user account with your desired username with administrator role and delete the old one. So lets us look at the steps:
- First of all, create a new user with administrator role.
- Then logout and login again with your newly created username.
- Now go to "Users" and click on "Delete" under the old username.
On the next screen, WordPress will ask what to do with the old username content. Make sure you select “Attribute all content to:” and from the drop-down section select your new username.
Make sure you do this step otherwise all content linked to your old username will be deleted.
Now click on "Confirm Deletion".
That's it, you have successfully created a new user account with your desired username having admin privileges.
Wrapping It Up
Changing username using a plugin is the easiest method you can try. And the best thing is that you can deactivate or delete the plugin after changing your WordPress username. this is the method I would recommend.
If you don’t want to use a plugin you can use phpMyAdmin. I won’t recommend this method to the newbies. Use this method only if you are familiar with phpMyAdmin or in case you have no other methods works for you.
The manual method is also quite easy but a lengthy one and also you need a new email address.
